Quick Tip: Have the Coffee, Not the Calories

Black coffee doesn’t have lots of calories, but once you start adding in the extras, the total skyrockets. Be mindful with the cream and sugar — not to mention the whipped cream and flavored syrups — and avoid those extravagant barista drinks (that will save you money, too). Better choices are low-fat milk or soy milk with a small amount of sugar. If straight coffee isn’t fancy enough, add cocoa powder or cinnamon for some extra zing.

Great idea! I drink about 6 -8 cups of coffee daily, usually just using Splenda and non-fat milk. Once a day I have a real treat: I sprinkle some cinnamon into the cup, add a smidge of orange peel, a teaspoonful of dark rum and then top it off with a teaspoonful of lite Cool Whip. Tastes very gourmet!
I tried my coffee black and it was great!! The best part…no extra calories. Thanks for the tip.
I discovered the powdered sweetner Stevia
years ago.It is a herb and is produced
from a plant. It can be a little costly
but it takes very little and I also use Coffe-mate sugar free creamer. You can now purchase Stevia from Walmart or your local health food store.
Thanks for your comment Pam! We are actually in the process of putting together an article on sweeteners including Stevia – stay tuned…
A great way to drink coffee black is to use Torani Sugar Free Flavoring Syrup. They have regular sugar also, but the Sugar Free is sweetened with Splenda and tastes great. Cost Plus World Market and other supermarkets carry the brand. Comes in vanilla, hazelnut, chocolet, etc.
I never tried Soy Milk before I read this article. Thank you!!! It’s really great and I never would have tried it without reading this.
I just started using Stevia which takes a little getting used to in coffee, but it is sweet. A little goes a long way. Thanks for the tip about cinnamon, it takes yummy. I can not wait to hear more about Stevia.
I have liquid Stevia. Does anyone know how to use it in baking?
I like to use a little bit of vanilla almond milk with some cinnamon…so yummy!
My boyfriend loves, as an interesting addition, to add a bit of chocolate ice cream to his coffee, it takes the place of milk or creamer and adds some chocolate flavor and sweetness, it also helps to cool really hot coffee. We have also used vanilla ice cream when out of creamer or milk
I love to put Fat free coffee creamers such as Hazelnut and top it off with light cool whip and sprinkled with a light coat of cinnamon! Yummy!
I have never had a balanced sugar level, so the use of equal proved to be a bad choice due to neuro and eyesight effects. Changed to Earl Grey tea, vanilla soy milk and sugar free added vanilla. My fav fav drink, refreshing even when cooled. Coffee is first fav however I have not used the soy in the coffee yet. Thank you for the suggestion.
odd as it may sound, i add fresh tea leaves, chocolate mint, that grows just outside the back door, it is aromatic and delish….the dash of cinnamon works, so does carob powder and chili powder….makes a choco/spicy brew that is tops…..
Making your own iced coffee is the way to go! You don't need as much sweetener or creamer as hot coffee. I like mine with a little skim milk.
How can hot coffee have less calories then cold coffee?According to the Starbucks website a venti brewed coffee (hot) has 5 calories whereas a venti iced coffee have 130 calories. Now I know that the iced drink is larger (20 oz versus 24) but come on.What are your thoughts?
