5 Fresh Foods To Boost Immunity

This winter, protect yourself from those cold or flu bugs going around. Eat more of these fresh foods to build up your immunity.

1) Nuts
Snack on almonds, cashews or walnuts, which are packed with vitamin E. This antioxidant helps kick those pesky free-radicals out of your body. Vitamin E also helps create antibodies that fight bacteria that make you sick. Other healthy vitamin E-rich foods are seeds and whole grains.

2) Citrus Fruits
The famous vitamin C helps fight infection and a good antioxidant to have — along with vitamin E. But there is more to citrus than just orangesgrapefruits, clementines, lemons, limes and tangerines are all part of this family, and they’re in season in winter so you can enjoy them at their juiciest. Citrus not your thing? Try bell peppers — they have more vitamin C than an orange! Potatoes, tomatoes and kiwi are also great sources.

3) Shrimp
So you’ve heard shrimp has cholesterol, but it’s also extremely low in fat and contains the antioxidant selenium. Many foods have a combination of nutrients, and you need to weigh the “bad” with the “good.” Selenium is a mineral needed in small amounts and works to support a healthy immune system. Seafood and meat are great sources for it.

4) Yogurt
The probiotics — or “good bacteria” found in yogurt and other foods — keep your digestive system up and running. According to research from the Journal of the American Dietetics Association, consuming foods with probiotics regularly may also help boost your immune system. Sauerkraut, miso and tempeh are other food sources to try.

5) Green Tea
The polyphenols in green tea act as potent antioxidants. Research suggests that catechins, a specific type of polyphenol, may stimulate the immune system cells and hinder disease-promoting compounds. Although you may detect a bitter taste, you can disguise it with a bit of honey. Adding milk is a no-no as it will bind to the polyphenols and stop their immunity benefits. (See some of Dana’s ideas on enjoying tea.)

Immunity Downers
Eating tons of high-fat foods and forgoing your daily fruits and veggies can also weaken the immune system. Smokers have an added disadvantage as smoking increases free-radicals, which definitely takes a toll on the immune system (another good reason to quit).

Be wary of restaurants promoting specialty drinks or products with add-ins that claim to increase immunity. The makers of Airborne settled a $23.3 million dollar false advertising suit last year because they claimed the vitamin and mineral mixture miraculously fights the common cold. Your best bet is sticking with whole, natural foods.

I lived in Japan for 7 years as a child and I think so many things listed in this artical are part and parcel of the Japanese diet I remeber. It is unforunate that we all have gone so far from eating healthy instead of quickly.

Judy Lux on February 18, 2009 at 1:20 pm

what’s happened with your food schedule — the shows I like the most you have once a week at 7:30a.m. – on not at all — too many of these food challenges — I like Elle and Quick Meals — more of those please.

Carol Eichhorn on February 18, 2009 at 7:35 pm

I hardly ever watch food network anymore, the fun shows where you could learn how to prepare a recipe have gone. give me recipes that look great & taste good and I’ll
tune back in.

Nancy Carlson on February 18, 2009 at 8:32 pm

Cooking is not a competition. It’s a relaxing activity. We don’t learn anything or pick up new ideas from all the challenges on Food Network. Please put back all the wonderful personalities with their many recipes and ideas for cooking the way people cook. Favorites: Ina Garten and Ellie Krieger.

Joan on February 19, 2009 at 12:06 am

I am glad to know I am on the right track with the immunity foods. I had Breast Cancer(doing great)and am eating all your suggestions. Agree with Carol what has happened to your schedule, do not like all those challenges. Have a great day :)

Georgie Weaver on February 19, 2009 at 1:19 am

The food network, I feel, has been lacking in shows where one can learn easy and simple food menu ideas for the typical home cook. Since recently experiencing a need for a gluten-free diet, I am very interested in someone who can provide ideas for tasty gluten-free receipes for breads, pizza dough, desserts, etc. My favorite food network celebrities are Alton Brown, Bobby Flay, Ellie Krieger, and Rachel Ray. I really miss Sara Molton!

Donna Cook on February 19, 2009 at 9:33 am

I love the Food Network! My children enjoy it just as much as I do. We try out so many of the recipes that we watch together. But we wish to see more of our favorite chef’s! Ina, Ellie & Giada are our favorites! I would love to see more of their shows, please!

Selvi on February 19, 2009 at 10:43 am

I agree with the girls above, there are to many challanges on T.V. now. I also like to see the cooks, all of them. I look forward to Sat. and Sun. when I can watch them all. Please not so many challanges. Also, the web site is very hard to move around in. Takes a long time.

Pauline on February 19, 2009 at 10:57 am

I agree on all of the boring challenges. Please take them off! I really enjoy Ina Garten, Ellie Krieger and Giada’s shows as well as the travel shows showcasing unique restaurants around the country.

Lorena on February 19, 2009 at 11:10 am

I watch the food network almost all the time. I have to agree with everyone else, the programming has not been good. Since there is very little on the major networks, I think everyone is looking for something to make that’s comforting and inexpensive with today’s economy.

Lynn Tietz on February 19, 2009 at 11:58 am

Hi all, thanks for the comments. Healthy Eats is only a cousin to Foodnetwork.com and we enjoy spotlighting the delicious, healthy recipes we find there and on Recipezaar.com. Feedback is always welcome here, but if you want to share your ideas with the Food Network team, drop them a line here or check out their behind-the-scenes blog The FN Dish and tell them who your favorite chefs are.

Kristine Brabson on February 19, 2009 at 12:00 pm

I LOVE FOOD NETWORK. Things have changed, but don’t care. You can get ideas off shows you may have already seen & make it your own. I’ll keep watch’n.

Michele on February 19, 2009 at 12:04 pm

I really miss the one person shows. Like Semi-Homemade. I was off work one day and noticed those shows are on during the day .I miss them at night. I’ve been watching less because of it.

Deloma Lusk on February 19, 2009 at 12:24 pm

Please come up with a substitute for nuts and seeds as far as nutrients go. I can’t have either one, with dicerticulosis. But would like the benefits from them. Thanks

Marie on February 19, 2009 at 12:41 pm

I miss the plain cooking and informative cooking shows. All the travel and meeting celebraties I can get on the travel channel. Please get back to the good ones like Barefoot Con and not so much cleavage! Its a cookling show, not a beauty contest !

Connie on February 19, 2009 at 1:24 pm

I’m glad I’m not the only one that is thinking the Food Network is not what it used to be. I have to switch stations just to see Emeril in the evening and I stayed home sick one day only to see an entire day of Ace of Cakes – I love Duff, but the marathon Duff was too much. I also love Guy, Alvin, and everyone else – but I don’t want an entire day of it. I have made great meals using recipes from Giada, Ina, etc. – please be sure we get a variety and plenty of these types of shows.

Lisa on February 19, 2009 at 1:39 pm

I agree with other viewers….too many competition shows. I think viewers have had enough of the reality competition shows on all tv channels. Except…the Iron Chef…that’s a cult classic. I have always come to food network to learn…not for the drama. I still enjoy many shows that are still on…The Ultimate w/Tyler, Barefoot, Giada…I actually miss Mario Batalli….he knew his food through and through…he had great info. and entirely authentic recipes…Sometimes I crave that culture and history in my food. Thanks for the network though and the website…it’s where I get all my recipes.

Avery on February 19, 2009 at 1:51 pm

Really enjoy the cooking shows but am quickly getting tired of all the “challenges”. Had a heart attack 3 weeks ago and now recognize how much fat and salt are put into food on these shows. These great cooks need to accept a challenge of how to make great tasting recipes with lower fat and salt content!

Lin on February 19, 2009 at 1:53 pm

One more comment…about the green tea…it’s actually not bitter if you brew it for only a few minutes….any longer and that’s when the bitter flavor develops.

Avery on February 19, 2009 at 1:56 pm

I love the Food Network. I think there is something for everyone there. I am a big fan of Paula Dean,Bobby Flay,Neeley’s and Guy Fierro and Tyler Florence. They are easy to cook with and entertaining to watch. I also like Michael Symon .

Crystal on February 19, 2009 at 2:22 pm

The following are vitamin c levels in milligrams per 100 grams:

Sweet Potato Raw with peel = 2.4, Tomato = 19, Raw potato with peel = 20, Lime Juice = 29, Grapefruit = 34, Oriental Persimmon = 40, Lemon Juice = 46, Orange = 53, Papaya = 62, Bell Pepper = 80.4, Green Kiwi = 98, Yellow Kiwi = 120-180, Tropical Guava = 183

An optimal daily intake of vitamin C for men is 200mg and of yet, there’s no study of daily intake for women. Hopefully scientists will join the 21st century and add that study, until then I will be eating my fair share of kiwis. I found this info on naturalhub.com and wikipedia.

Avery on February 19, 2009 at 2:32 pm

I agree with the rest to many challenges, because of these I don’t watch as often. Love Ina, Paula and Sandra.

Kelly on February 19, 2009 at 2:35 pm

I hardly watch the food network anymore. All the food challenges are boring. I want real cooks cooking real food that we all can use in our daily menus. Ina, Giada, etc.

Miki on February 19, 2009 at 4:17 pm

I agree with the above, too many contest shows, not enough cooking shows, like the oldies, Emeril, Paula Dean, Bare Foot Contessa and Tyler Moore Not enough cooking shows I too am not watching the food channel as I used to.

Jennie Navarro on February 19, 2009 at 4:29 pm

As of late I fine it a challenge to watch Foodnetwork, with all the “Challenges” it’s like watching the other networks with cops & robbers & robbers & cops enough reality. The reality is I still cook every night after work and don’t win the cash. Please lets get back to the old tried and true. I am aways looking for recipes for birthdays at work.

Barbara Sylvester on February 19, 2009 at 4:31 pm

Let’s get some of the “real” cooking shows on TV at nighttime, we all work during the day…I’m sick of watching the 5 ft. cakes being decorated for weddings, Miley’s b-day…like most of us watching have any aspiration of doing this … ??? Pleeeease. Let’s get back to the basics…why we started watching you anyway, what made you successful. Good personalities (Paula, Ina, Sandra, Mario, Michael, etc.) and good menus. And the website is now so hard to navigate, I’ve given up. Time to take a hard look at where you’ve been and where you want to go. Kudos on the magazine though!

Kim on February 19, 2009 at 4:37 pm

Couldn’t agree more regarding all the ‘challenge’ shows. Love Iron Chef and Chopped, but enough already with the amateur shows! I miss Emeril and have a hard time finding anything worth watching during Prime Time.
We used to count on Food Network for great evening viewing…but no more…bring back the cooking shows!!

azlori on February 19, 2009 at 4:55 pm

Garlic – fresh if you can is also a great way to fight the bugs!! My hubby and I find creative ways to incorporate it into our meals. Dinner is the best so that way the garlic flavor and aroma aren’t so strong by morning. And just as Rachael Ray says “two garlic’s cancel eachother out” :)

Joanna on February 19, 2009 at 6:05 pm

I like the cooking shows more and less challenges. I like Ina, Tyler, Emeril, Nigella. I wish someone would do a show on preparing multiple meals that can be frozen and then taken out during the week to be cooked. I like being able to pull out a meal (that I’ve prepared) and just pop in the oven during a busy week. Also I wish that they would give substitutes for nuts and mayo which I hate.

monica on February 19, 2009 at 6:23 pm

its true that seafood helps for the immunity and its true I ve lived in india for 18yrs where lot of diseases can easily spread but i remember no one in my family is got any disease even strep throat i think its becoz we add lot of seafood in our cooking including crabs

Manny on February 19, 2009 at 7:20 pm

Just another person who thinks there are too many challenges and not enough of the cooking shows. I turn to another channel when the challenges come on.

Connie on February 19, 2009 at 7:45 pm

What happened to Big Daddy’s show??? He won a challenge, then prepared some amazing dishes on his show and disappeared. I also look forward to individual cooking talent that makes life interesting and tasty… Bobby Flay, Paula Dean, and BAM! Emeril.

cheryl on February 19, 2009 at 8:14 pm

I agree with the too much cleavage comment. LOVE Ina and let’s not forget Ann Burrell- “Secrets of a Restaurant Chef”. Ann is great and has a wonderful personality! What did they do with Cooking from the Loft? That female host was very interesting and knowledgable. Now they have her as a judge on one of the challenge show. Bring her back but not as early as before on Saturday morning. Love Daisey from Puerto Rico and loved Ingrid Hoffman from Columbia!! Bring her back too! Thanks

Juanita on February 19, 2009 at 10:48 pm

I thought I was alone in thinking that there is no use in watching the Food Channel any more. I don’t enjoy the challanges. I miss the evening shows with creative cooking by the original line up of chefs. All of the new shows that are just in some way connected to food do not interest me. I, too, have problems with the new website. The site for daily show receipes does not work correctly. I don’t like that the site does not go back to the spot where you were before.I find that the new shows are not as good. The receipes not as enticing to try. Go Back To The Old Format!

Adrienne on February 20, 2009 at 6:54 am

YES! and YES! Bring the chefs back during prime-time. Favorite show: Alton Brown. The competition stuff gets old very quickly. And yes, the website is VERY, VERY hard to navigate. It looks great, but takes 15 minutes just to search and find a recipe. I thought it was my computer, but this is the only website that I have trouble with, and now others have said it, too. Thank you!

Robbin on February 20, 2009 at 8:43 am

I also agree with many of the peoples comments. The challanges happen to be my least faveorite. I like Alton Brown though. Hes like the Albert Einstein of the culinary world. Also, i would like to see a show just about desserts! I think that would be a success. But you should know.. I still love the food network channel. It doesnt leave my tv screen!

Shelby on February 20, 2009 at 9:32 am

I want to know when & where u post corrections to recipes that viewers point out. It is VERY important to know. thx.

rosemarie on February 20, 2009 at 11:52 am

Whew! I thought it was just me who thought there are too many challenge shows! Gotta love Guy; Paula; Emeril; Mario; The Neelys; Bobby; Tyler & Alton. Oh, and How To Boil Water was great!

Cathy on February 20, 2009 at 1:08 pm

I think cooking means way of relaxing and enjoying every moment you are in the kitchen but should not be like a competition. I don’t see it in the food network lately. Whenever I watch Ina Garten, Emerill or Paula Dean cook..I feel like I want to go cook now and makes me feel relaxed to watch those shows.

SP on February 20, 2009 at 1:27 pm

I love the new challenge shows. Food Network Competition is a family favorite in the house. :) Keep them coming! Our favorites by far are Alton Brown, Guy Fieri and Duff, haha.

Gussie Halloran on February 20, 2009 at 1:52 pm

I LOVE THE FOOD NETWORK!!!!! :)

maria on February 20, 2009 at 2:39 pm

People need to stop complaining about “cleavage issues” with Giada. Get your minds out of the gutter and take her show for what it is, great recipes from a great personality.

scott on February 20, 2009 at 3:42 pm

I RECENTLY STARTED TO WATCH THE FOOD NETWORK, SIMPLE BECAUSE REGULAR TV IS JUNK. I DON´T REALLY COOK, BUT SINCE I STARTED WATCHING YOUR SHOWS IT HAS INSPIRED ME TO TRY NEW THINGS. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. THE CHALLENGES CAN BE A LITTLE MUCH. MILEY SWEET SIXTEEN, WHO CARES.

Flo on February 20, 2009 at 3:48 pm

I love the cooking shows (esp Elle and Giada). I do not care for the challenges and now find I am watching much less Food Network…less challenges please!

Frances Peacock on February 20, 2009 at 4:28 pm

I agree with all above — dump challenge amateur shows — dull, dull, dull! Bring back the cooks, Iron Chef as ONLY challenge — such as, Ina, Giada, Bobby, Guy, Tyler, Rachael, etc. Web site terrible!

Patricia on February 20, 2009 at 6:02 pm

I must agree with most comments. the shows with one host or hostess cooking are the best. Ilove Ina, Paula, Anne, Tyler and all the rest but I do miss Sara Moulton and Michelle Ervater. What happened to them?

DOLORES on February 20, 2009 at 7:19 pm

I think there should be a show that teaches people with special dietary needs how to eat healty and enjoy it!! Especially for people with Diabetes, and Kidney Disease. One of the hardest things for me(when I was on dialysis) was to find meals that I could eat and actually enjoy!!

Devon Jacobs on February 20, 2009 at 8:38 pm

I think that there are too many challenges too. I agree with Kim about the website being hard to navigate. I complained after the change…not that it did any good. Bring back the old format. I have a request that all recipes have a nice large picture with them. I get most of my recipes from the many cooking blogs now. They have wonderful pictures of the finished dish. You can hardly see the ones on this site. When you save recipes it is so nice to have an appetizing picture to go with it. I just love Ina, Guy, Bobby and Tyler.

Sharon on February 20, 2009 at 9:04 pm

Too many challenges!
Even my grandsons love Alton, as his shows are very informative.

Roher Child on February 21, 2009 at 7:05 am

I have to agree with most of the other comments – Food Network isn’t what it use to be. I used to watch Food Network all the time but i don’t enjoy all the challenges – i want useful everyday ideas and it’s just not there any more. I also find the changes to the website anti user friendly – don’t go to it like i used to any more either.

Lisa Jackson on February 21, 2009 at 8:02 am

I have to sound like the broken record, What happened to alton brown. The only time I see him is in iron chef. Did he hang up his apron. rachel is great but 3 times a day??? Also all the salt your cooks use. Didnt any of them learn to cook using something different (mrs. Dash) in rice beats salt hands down. Thanks for listening. And please slow down the challenges its getting where the animal planet is better to watch (sorry)

cheryl pangman on February 21, 2009 at 8:21 am

I agree with the above gals, I use to watch Food Network every evening to relax and learn after work, but it’s not relaxing at all with Iron Chef every time you turn it on. I don’t even watch Food Network anymore except on the week-ends to learn from favorites like Paula. I’m from the south so I really relate to her and her down to earth foods that people actually eats. Please end all the challenges at night already! Who wants to watch the challenges every single evening! I’d like to see more southern cooks like Big Daddy’s and The Neeleys…PLEASE!!!

Karron on February 21, 2009 at 9:37 am

I agree. I can’t watch Food Network in the evening. Too many non cooking/recipe shows. Boring!

Jess on February 21, 2009 at 10:04 am

I agree with all the comments about the food challenge shows. They are not fun and not food you can prepare at home. The good ones are Paula, Rachael, Ina, Sandra Lee, Michael – ones like those. They are entertaining as well as educational. Please change your scheduling!!! I used to watch all the time and now I have to hunt for the ones I like. Thank you!!

Susan on February 21, 2009 at 10:07 am

I do agree that FN has gotten too many challenge shows airing lately, however I do enjoy some of them such as the Challenges that come on Sundays, I love to watch the cake decorating contest and Pillsbury bake-off i think it is very exciting to see a normal everyday person able to win $20,000 for their own ideas. I love Ina, Giada, Paula, and Sandra I wish they would air them day and also one episode at nite. I do get tired of watching the same challenges over and over, i wish they would air some new ones if they are going to keep playing so many. Please bring Giada back traveling, she is so inspiring for so many people who cant travel. Oh and by the way i think FN needs to give Bobby Dean his own show bcuz he is Sooo Cute!

kim on February 21, 2009 at 11:28 am

I love the food tv network now!!! Finally, a nice blend of cultures, Neelys, Big Daddys House, Daisy, and Sunny Anderson-Love Paula Deen–Variety is the spice of life–However, you still have a way to go–some Chinese/Japanese cooks are a must!! Their cuisine is extreme and their talent immense!!-someone like Martin Yan–a real rural cook that can delve into culture with some excusions into chinese kitchens to spice things up. At one time the food network was mostly Italian cooking and while I enjoy Italian food–there are different types of food that are equally as delicious. The food challenges are O-K, but, I agree that you need a good health food guru like Dr. Weil to instill some wholesome, healthy cooking ideas–Also, why don’t they have a show to teach viewers how to make wedding cakes and flowers and omit the Cake Challenges. Please continue to inject racial diversity–it is truly refreshing!!

Denise on February 21, 2009 at 11:36 am

P.S. I notice that meats are never washed on any show–just removed from the store/butcher wrappings and thrown into a pan–please tell me that this is just for t.v. Still and all–It is nasty, SALMONELLA-hello, rinse all food before you attempt to cook or eat–what’s up with that??

Denise on February 21, 2009 at 11:42 am

I also agree with too, too, much cleavage not enough cooking, and too much entertaining a studio audiance.I love paula, but, she is too silly on paulas party, i dont watch.I, also love the 1 person shows.

tisa on February 21, 2009 at 11:52 am

I have been watching the Food Network for many years and have learned a lot. My favorite female – Ina; my favorite male – Tyler. I think there are way too many competition shows. I, for one, turn them off! I’d like to see more shows geared towards healthy eating with minimum ingredients. Not all of us have the means to stock a pantry with ingredients that we may only use once.

Pat on February 21, 2009 at 11:57 am

I love the Foodnetwork shows. Yes, there are too many “challenge” shows. Wishing there would be more of the favorites like Giada, Tyler, Michael and Guy later in the day due to my work schedule. I think they should also try different shows like diabetic cooking or vegan cooking.

heidi on February 21, 2009 at 12:23 pm

The challenges send me to another channel, also. Iron Chef is worthwhile to me because one may learn new techniques – and the commentary from Alton Brown is good and the judges are usually entertaining. Otherwise, let’s see more of real cooking from real people. I miss Sarah Molton. And why not have something from Mario Batali? He is fantastic.

Lyn Furrh on February 21, 2009 at 12:26 pm

Ditto to all the cook-offs, challenges and contests. My 22 year old daughter (studying culinary arts) got her 62 year old pop watching TFN a couple of years ago. Even went out for a upscale kitchen reno with Wolfe (dual fuel six burner – love it) Range & Sub Zero goodies to match. NOW I have to watch what I eat, healthier the better. Bring back the oldie goldie’s where you could watch and learn from the pro’s not me mention more quality recipe’s and more time with my DD (darlin daughter).

Jim Hogshead on February 21, 2009 at 1:13 pm

When did cooking become a reality show..I don’t like everything is a contest…cooking is not a contest it should be fun and enjoyable.

jane on February 21, 2009 at 2:20 pm

As a daytime working person, I would like to see more evening cook shows (and less cleavage). I would like to see more of cooks like Mario Batali, Ina, Michael Simon, Robert Irvine, etc.

Kate on February 21, 2009 at 2:54 pm

Wow. I thought I was alone disliking the challenges. The foodnetwork is getting better at diversity with the glaring absense of Asian American chefs.

Betty on February 21, 2009 at 4:34 pm

Love Giada, Ingrid, Ina, Paula, Sandra, Tyler and Bobby and so many more. (Alton sucks), but have rally cut back watching since Emril disappeared. He IS the Food Network.

Bill Hoog on February 21, 2009 at 4:53 pm

I’m not enjoying the Foodnetwork as much. Tired of the challenges. Alton Brown seems to be on when I tune in. I’ve learned so much watching previously, I’d like you to look at the shows you are broadcasting now and bring back the older concepts that made your shows fun to watch.

deb on February 21, 2009 at 5:24 pm

I love all the chefs. I agree with the above about the challenges. To much Ace of Cakes. I like Guy he’s great. Rachael, Ina, Sandra, Paula,Giada,Emirl,Alton,Bobby Flay, Mario, etc. I love Iron Chef America. Big Daddy’s House and the Neeley’s great shows I watch all the time. The food detective not so much. The next food network star yes I like that. Please do something about your programing. I don’t like your new home page to hard to find what Im looking for. Thank You.

Diane on February 21, 2009 at 6:12 pm

I also agree with most of the above comments…way too many food challenge type programs. Also, I find that this website is NOT as user friendly as it used to be. What happened?

Linda D. on February 21, 2009 at 6:26 pm

I agree about too many challenges and pastry shows. While the cakes are pretty, the average person doesn’t do things like that. Ace of Cakes is useless. There should be more cooking shows on during primetime. The best non cooking show you have is Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. That is useful in that it lets us know good places to eat. Move Ann and Alex to prime time along with Paula. Bring back Robert Irvine. I’ve learned a lot from him. Thanks.

Joe on February 21, 2009 at 7:37 pm

I am an advid Food Network TV watcher. During the day it’s all i watch because i don’t like to the talk shows and court shows that tie up valuable daytime tv. iused to could count on The Food Network for good tv in the evenings and weekends as well. Lately, they have gotten more into the “reality TV” scene and that doesn’t interest me. It used to be a great option for the reality trash that’s on other stations. Now, I’ve gone back to reading in the evenings. It would be nice to get back to watching for the reasons that The Food Network was originally invented. Most of us watch for new recipes and how to. I am not interested in watching to see the best man win on the food network. Please bring back the old lineup. I’d like to come back!

Jennette Williams on February 21, 2009 at 7:54 pm

Another anti-vote for challenge cooking. I actually saw a contender dripping sweat off of his nose onto the dish he was preparing. That was on “TOP CHEF”. Alot of sweating on “IRON CHEF”. Eewwww!!

Maryann on February 21, 2009 at 8:53 pm

And here I thought I was the only one who didn’t like the new shows on Food Network. Bring back the old format with the shows that made Food Network what it is or was. Your ratings can’t be what they use to be.

Susie Ross on February 21, 2009 at 10:43 pm

I love all of the challenge shows- Chopped is one of my favorites. I also like URS. Keep em coming.

Sarah on February 22, 2009 at 8:15 am

I try to watch all the food shows.Paula Deen is my favorite. But I love Bobby,Emeril, the Neelys,oh well that’s just a few. Keep them coming, the more the merrier.

Andy on February 22, 2009 at 10:32 am

Again, just a reminder to everyone — Healthy Eats isn’t directly related to the Food Network site or their shows. To be sure your thoughts reach the right eyes, share your comments with the Food Network team at the FN Dish blog or their feedback form.

Kristine Brabson on February 22, 2009 at 10:54 am

I agree about having more of the single cook shows that teach methods and giving health information, taking cooking back to the basics, more that help with special diet information for people with health problems. My family has a lot sensitive stomach problems and I have to concentrate on foods that are flavorful and easy to digest. I like Paula, Giada, Robin, Elle,Ina and Sandra Lee and miss Sara Molten.

Char on February 22, 2009 at 11:15 am

I think the ‘NO Challenge Stuff’ is a consenus here. I agree. My favorite is Jamie Oliver but he’s only on at 7:30am on Saturdays. Love Alton, Tyle, Giada, Bobby, Sandra, Guy and Ina (when she’s not trying to show off her friends). Need more of them at night rather than the Challenge show.

Jayne on February 22, 2009 at 11:33 am

Wow! I thought I was all alone in thinking there were too many challenges now, too much cleavage and too much trouble to successfully navigate the website (too slow). One positive for me is that the challenges have replaced the nightly over-the-top Emeril talent show! Thank you for that. I’m with many of the others…I would like to see more episodes of ANYONE (except Emeril) where we can cook inexpensively, healthily and beautifully. Okay…I’ll go to the other link and post my gripes and complaints there.

My favorites: Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson, Tyler Florence, Ina Garten, Sandra Lee (without the crafty stuff and the liquor), Big Daddy, and Giada DeLaurentis. But most of these cook too expensively for me. I’m learning how to cut down on the cost, fat and salt of their recipes and making something I can use and afford (in my pocket and at my waistline).

I have to ditto on all of the previous comments. I truly miss Rachael and Giada traveling to cities in the U.S. showing viewers where the “tasty” spots are. Please bring them back and reduce challenge shows. They are not entertaining.

Melody on February 22, 2009 at 11:48 am

Iron Chef needs to be on the Sports channel; those viewers like that stressing action. My favorites cooks are Rachel and Aida, but you can’t beat Paula for a fun time cooking with friends.

I agree with mostly everyone above, I used to watch Food Network all the time and learn from it. It has changed so much that I hardly ever watch anymore. There are too many cooking challenges. Bring back the shows with Ina Garten, Giada, Sara Molten, and many others where we can learn and gather recipes. I miss that. Also you website has changed, and I am afraid to say, not for the better. Please bring back the ‘good ole’ days’.

I totally agree with all the comments posted above about too many “challenges” on the Food Network. Also happy
to see that someone else noticed the lack of washing meat
and vegetable ingredients before incorporating them into
recipes. Along with that, please tell the chefs to avoid
wearing such long sleeves that “dangle” into the dishes
while they are preparing them! I, too, would also like to see more recipes presented for “special” diets, like ADA-
approved menus or gluten-free menus, etc. Please be-
come the user-friendly, wholesome cooking station you
were when I first tuned in so many years ago. And please keep the diverse, creative, inspiring, informative
personalities coming! I want to be entertained and en-
couraged to use my new kitchen! And for goodness
sake, bring back Emeril!

Hate to beat a dead horse, but everyone is right about the challenge shows. Way too many of them! For those of us who work during the day there are few opportunities to see the actual preparing of meals and learning new recipes. Bring back more of the shows with individual contributors in the evening. Please!! It’s not even fun to watch anymore.

Susan on February 22, 2009 at 2:12 pm

Hey everyone, go to http://www.foodnetwork.com/contact-us/package/index.html or use the link in the comment three comments up to express your opinion. This is only going to Healthy Eats and not to the Food Network.

Susan on February 22, 2009 at 2:29 pm

I agree with the other comments regarding too many challenge shows. We want to come home from work & watch a “good” cooking show with recipes we can try at home. I also agree with so many that the cleavage is just too much, I usually will turn the channel even if it is one of my favorites. I also very seldom go to the website it is just too difficult to find the recipe or whatever I am looking for, even just to read & look for new things. I am watching more HGTV & the Hallmark channel nowadays.

I agrree FN is NOTHING like it was.But I would ask that Rachael Ray goes away, along with her husband. Please DO NOT give her another show! Why do they think we want to see someone throw slop together 5 times a day, and then listen to her narrate about places she hasn’t even walked into to.Go Alton!!.

Donna on February 22, 2009 at 3:57 pm

what happened to the shoe that john beash was to host “my la.” please get back to cooking shows not so much drama! where is sara molten? miss her!

pat g on February 22, 2009 at 4:04 pm

I agree with most of the viewers here. FN is about the food, first and foremost. Less challenges, please. I love Paula, Alton, Sandra, Giada, Rachel, Guy, Emeril, Sunny, Tyler, Iron Chef, Bobby (Throwdown is great). I saw a show not too long ago that focused on Raw Food Diet. More of that, please. Also, diabetics need help, too. Get Patty Labelle to cook on your network, she is wonderful for diabetic cooking. Macrobiotic cooking would be great, bring back Mario. How about juicing? Let’s see the Food Network go greener. Thank you for all of your hard work. Love you guys!

Sabrina on February 22, 2009 at 5:20 pm

It is probably easier for your budget by using “Challenges”. But apparently a lot of us dislike them. This is not cooking! So, I too do not watch your channel any more.

Gabriele on February 22, 2009 at 6:32 pm

Yes, I agree with a lot of viewers,I really appreciated the “old” programming that was more informative on foods and nutrition. I especially liked “Taste” with David Rosegarten although Alton Brown is wonderful on “Good Eats”. Please bring more shows like that for the evening viewing most of us have jobs during the day and miss all the better shows.

Gita on February 22, 2009 at 7:21 pm

ok come on guys. I love everything about the FN. The challenges are NOT too much. If you love food and cooking you would also love the challenges. The only thing i can agree with is the Ace of Cakes marathons can be a bit much. Outside of that EVERYTHING IS GREAT!!! Lighten up people. It’s not like you’re always taking back these recipes to your own kitchens. Some of it is simply entertainment. The new website is a little difficult to navigate though.

deidere on February 22, 2009 at 9:27 pm

The vieweres have spoken; if it ain’t broke DON’T fix it. Bring back our beloved Chefs, with receipes we serve our REAL families fresh, easy & delicious food, its that simple! PS-I’m watching more PBS because they air the old Chefs shows…

Tami on February 27, 2009 at 11:50 am

I actually like all of the competitions. My family loves Iron Chef! The main reason we watch FN. We also love the FN cake, sugar, etc. competitions.

Anne on October 26, 2009 at 4:21 pm

I've been turning Food Network off more than on lately. I have learned so much from your chefs, but now that there are so many "challenges", I find I am not enjoying any of them, and certainly not learning anything. Please, please bring back the old way of programming! I really miss it.

Lynne on October 26, 2009 at 8:57 pm

I agree, take the challenges off. Hardly anyone likes them. Give us some simple cooking that does not require that you buy everything in the store to make it. Giada's show, in my opinion, is one of the best. Her presentation is very good

joyce on December 3, 2009 at 12:10 am

I love the challenges! Don't get why ya'll don't???? You still have plenty of the people like Ina, Giada, and Paula! And it's good how you have the regular shows in the morning and challenges at night! Anyways, this article is about foods that immunity, not this! And, if you really want to see the reg. shows, just record it on your tv and watch it at night! and there on ALL THE TIME on weekends!!!!!!!!!!

ewwww on December 3, 2009 at 1:14 am

hahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU!!!!! I LOVE THEM TOO!!!!!!!!!!!

I beg to differ, on your comment re: airbourne, it does work in combatting the cold virus! I drank it while I had a cold, and it did work! I’m a firm believer and I do recommend it to others.

tona on December 3, 2009 at 3:37 am

What about the nutritional value of pecans?

Chris on January 14, 2010 at 1:17 pm

I LOVE the Food Network, but I am lucky that I can record the daytime cooks. I don't care much for the challenges either. It seems like that's all that's on at night. However, I do like guy and Unwrapped! I love to watch the cooks prepare a great recipe and get good hints and techniques from them. I can do without the challenges! Paula Deen is one of my favorites! I also like Big Daddy, Sunny, Giada, Ina and the Neeley's! Keep them coming!

Barbara Hardcastle on January 20, 2010 at 8:53 pm

Food network is rapidly becoming boring just like the other networks because of all the challenges and bad programming. I work 70 to 80 hours a week and don't want to watch shows that waste what little time I have to watch. More Ina and Giada, please. I am a vegetarian and would love to watch a cooking show devoted to vegetarian cooking. If you can't find anyone, I'll be glad to do the show! I am a cancer survivor for 10 years and have stayed cancer free due in most part, to my vegetarian diet.

Yes, definitely bread pudding! It can be a little high-calorie sometimes but I love it. Gonna add that to our list of ideas for our ongoing lightened up series.
