5 New Supermarket Finds

bobs red mill
Every year, dietitians from the Greater New York Dietitians Association get together to talk food (my kind of meeting!). I got to attend this year’s gathering and sampled several interesting new products — some already on your supermarket shelves. Check out these 5 goodies.

Kardea Gourmet Bars
I’m not a fan of many snack bars, so when I first stopped by this booth, I made my “yuck” face. The Kardea representative saw — poor guy! But once I tasted these bars, I couldn’t believe how yummy they were. I took extras home and snagged a few samples for Dana, too. At 150 calories, the bars contain 7 grams of fiber and are low in saturated fat. They’re also dairy-free and sweetened with agave syrup. I tasted four flavors: cranberry almond, lemon ginger, chai spice and, my favorite, banana nut. Gourmet Bars are sold at Whole Foods, but you can also order them online on the Kardea website.

Smart Balance Milk & Peanut Butter
The creators of the Smart Balance buttery spreads have several new offerings. First, there’s the fat-free milk that tastes like 2% milk (a competitor for Skim Plus — also at the meeting). The Smart Balance milk has added omega-3 fats and is antibiotic- and hormone-free. I also tasted their yummy new peanut butter, sweetened with agave nectar. (There seems to be a lot of love going around for agave nectar these days.)

Bob’s Red Mill: Gluten Free Line
We love giving shout-outs to Bob’s Red Mill, but did you know they have an entire “Gluten Free” line with more than 40 products? Oats, bread mix, brownie mix, pizza crust mix and pancake mix — I grabbed a pamphlet for my celiac-stricken, future sister-in-law. We’ll be baking the brownies and making those pancakes very soon!

Organic Bistro Whole Life Meals
I’m big on eating home-cooked food, but even I know the convenience of frozen meals can be hard to resist. Created with the help of a registered dietitian, Organic Bistro meals are made with lean proteins and contain at least 2 to 3 veggie servings per meal. They range from 320 to 450 calories per meal and are low in sodium. Guess what? They’re also gluten-free!

Adora Chocolate Calcium Supplements
Getting the right amount of calcium in my diet isn’t always easy. Sometimes I need a little extra boost. Rather than force down chalky pills, I found the most delicious chocolate calcium supplements. I’ve seen these coin-shaped supplements in previous shows, but this time they appeared in my goody bag. Adora supplements come in both dark and milk chocolate and can be found in specialty markets such as Whole Foods (or you can order them online).

Calcium supplements in the form of chocolate sound great, but does it taste like regular chocolate?

Sierra on June 21, 2009 at 5:44 pm

HI Sierra,
As a die-hard chocoholic, I don’t like “fake” tasting chocolate–but these calcium supplements were yummy!

I picked up the Smart Balance peanut butter with agave nectar on my last grocery run — always love trying out the different peanut butters to find new faves. It was very good!

I sampled it on some whole wheat crackers–delicious!

I do not like Smart Balance Milk…it is like the old thin watery bluish color and tastes like water…
My choice is "Over The Moon" it is skim milk but tastes like 2%…it is very delicious and zero fat…
Smart balance is just far to watery…
I do like their spray butter it is excellent with no cals…

Sorry gang, I do a little of the real stuff……better than some of the substitute ingredients in the generics.

Why do people insist on eating chemicals instead of the real food our bodies crave. Eat real raw milk, real butter, real eggs. Your body is wasting so much time and energy trying to metabolize chemicals that it doesn't want or need that , that alone is making you gain weight. Wake up people If you want to lose weight, don't eat so much and get out and move.

Yes, they are quite good. I shared them with family and friends and everyone agreed. A great way to get a calcium supplement!

I tried to print the Land-O-Lakes coupon for the new butter and the olive oil coupon and did not print please check your website.

Judy Baker on July 24, 2009 at 3:45 pm

Judy, you should contact the Land O'Lakes folks as that ad and coupon are offered through their external site, which we do not control. I have passed your issue along to our ad sales team in hopes that they can share it with their contacts there. Here is their CONTACT US page to reach the Land O'Lakes people directly.

I emailed the address you gave and am waiting for a reply. I will be very suprised, if this offer is true. On their website a sample pack of 4 bars (one of each flavor) is $7.95 + s/h.

Buy 1 LB. of the best unsalted butter of your choice. Pour 1 1/2 cups of light olive oil in a blender and add the butter until all are blended. Store in a suitable container in the fridge. Use as you would any other spread.

I live in the Midwest and can't get a hold of any of these foods. I would love to try some of the foods mentioned above, especially the Kandea Bars. Where do you purchase them from? Do you have to purchase these items online? We only have one healthy food store here and I have never seen any of these items at the health food store.

On Fruit Juice: Good or Bad?, CallFritz.com said:

If that is the case, it should say something about the fruit juice it's self. They are not real fruit. How can something so natural be so bad for you? Think about that. I would try a Yoli Health Drink to be on the safe side.
