Hot water on airplanes is not boiled to the hottest temperature required to kill bacteria. I read an article on that warning travelers to stay away from coffee and tea in flight if at all possible. Anyone else familiar with the article?

I pack a couple apples, nuts, trail mix , and/or a sandwich. If I have a long wait at the airport, as I did the last time, due to when someone could drop me off, I will use a clean take-away container and make a salad, if you add some chicken or tuna salad to that then you won't need to take any dressing.
I found that I can take empty water bottles thru security and then I fill them at a water fountain. No one has asked me about them and they fit into my carry-on bag.

I usually bring a few Cup-of-Noodles on board and ask for hot water. Think of it, any food that needs hot water or can be heated in/ and disposed of in its own container is an option for Take-Along snacks for traveling. I also like to bring my own water container (empty) and a box of drink-mix packets. A box of 10 packets (lipton iced tea or Crystal light mix) is the same price of a medium soda at the airport!

I take hard-boiled eggs and trail mix. My trail mix consists of pumpkin seeds, raisins, coconut and sunflower seeds since I am allergic to nuts. Sometimes I dehydrate sweet potatoes and zucchini, which makes healthy chips. Also, natural turkey jerky is easy to travel with.

Ever save those empty chinese take-out soup containers? I fill it with cereal and ask for a cup of milk when I'm on board. Microwaveable soups and pasta like Campbells and Chef-boy-ardee are also great. Just ask the attendent to heat it up.Best part, no cooler needed and you have a hot meal.

My favorite thing to pack is a Martha Stewart trick- A hot or cold baked sweet potato wrapped in foil.
Peeled boiled eggs with sea salt and fresh ground pepper in a snack-sized plastic bag or
natural almonds are other favorites of mine.

As a backpacker, I have lots of ideas about portable food. If you want something hot to take with you, check out TrailCooking.com for recipes that you assemble at home, then just add hot water. I make a great dehydrated spaghetti sauce!

These are all great tips. I have also taken bagels with peanut butter, they do not need to be kept cold. Have used the trail mix and bananas also. The airport food is not only expensive, but usually is not very tasty.

Really inspired by this article. Had looked up the possibility of taking a cargo ship to Chile last year. The other problems for a blogger like myself is the high costs of satellite phones on cargo ships and that you may not be able to get home in an emergency until the ship docks at the next port. Love to give it a go though.
