Taste Test: Peanut Butter

peanut butter brands
To us, peanut butter is important stuff. You can use it in so many dishes — with apples, in a sandwich, in baked goods and more. You want to be sure you’re choosing the healthiest brand. I have my favorite (which is included on this list), but we wanted to see how a few of the most popular brands stacked up.

Peanuts and peanut butter contain healthy fats as well as protein, but some packaged butters have extra extra oils and sweeteners added to the mix. For our 1 to 5 rating (5 being the highest), we considered taste, texture (we tested only smooth varieties) and sugar content for a basic two-tablespoon serving. As for price, all the brands tested ranged from $2.79 to $3.19.

Skippy
Rating: 3
Nutrition Info: 190 calories, 16 grams of fat, 3 grams of sugar
Our Take: I was raised on this stuff, but that was before I learned about added sweeteners and hydrogenated oils! Though it does have a good flavor and creamy consistency, I’m turned off by the added sugar and unhealthy fats.

Teddie
Rating: 4
Nutrition Info: 180 calories, 16 grams of fat, 1 gram of sugar
Our Take: This natural peanut butter contains peanuts, flaxseeds and salt. It had a nice peanut flavor but a slightly gritty texture. Like most peanut butters made without extra oils, this brand needed to be mixed well initially to stir in some surface oil (if refrigerated after the first mix, it no longer separates). The flax adds some omega-3 fat but also affects the flavor. If you’re a peanut butter purist, it’s better to get your omega-3s elsewhere. (Here’s an article on better choices for omega 3-rich foods.)

Jif
Rating: 3
Nutrition Info: 190 calories, 16 grams of fat, 3 grams of sugar
Our Take: This one had almost exactly the same ingredients in Skippy — added sugar and hydrogenated oils — but it did have a more peanutty flavor (my guess is they use a different variety of peanuts).

Trader Joe’s
Rating
: 5
Nutrition Info: 190 calories, 16 grams of fat, 1 gram of sugar
Our Take: This is the peanut butter we keep in my house. The only ingredients are peanuts and salt. It has great flavor, a silky smooth texture and won’t separate once refrigerated. I’ve been recommending it to clients for years and have been able to convert even the most loyal brand-name peanut butter lovers.

Smart Balance
Rating: 3
Nutrition Info: 200 calories, 18 grams of fat, 1 gram of sugar
Our Take: I was surprisingly disappointed by this jar. Made with peanuts, flaxseed and palm oil (for texture) it is sweetened with molasses, but has a stale flavor that was, honestly, kind of gross. We also tried the Smart Balance “naturally sweetened” with agave nectar instead of molasses but it had a bitter and unappealing after taste. My husband (a fellow PB lover) asked if we could throw these two jars out pronto).

Tell Us: What’s your favorite peanut butter?

You can buy Teddie without the added Flaxseed and there is no gritty texture at all. It is by far my favorite and it is half the price of the others.

Skippy Natural Super Chunk!

adfadfaf on December 8, 2009 at 5:11 pm

I'm right there with you with preferring the Trader Joe's brand. I originally preferred the Organics brand from Safeway/Vons, but once I tried the Trader Joe's PB made with Valencia peanuts, that's what's been in my pantry ever since. It's delicious in taste and texture, and for whatever reason it's not separated too much when you first open it, so not a lot of stirring is required.

I made the mistake of trying PB with no added salt once (from Whole Foods, though Trader Joe's carries a variety as well), and…BLECK! Disgusting. PB needs salt.

julo on December 8, 2009 at 5:53 pm

I will take your smart balance with agave if you're tossing it, haha. It's one of my favorites! I also have a huge peanut butter tooth for flavored companies like PB&Co. and Naturally Nutty

Food Makes Fun Fuel on December 8, 2009 at 6:32 pm

There is a brand I found in my foodstore called Crazy Richards. It is an all natural peanut butter with no additives, not even salt. It comes in both crunchy and creamy styles, and once you refridgerate it, it will not seperate.

Peanutbutter Lover on December 8, 2009 at 8:54 pm

natural nutty butter toffee…best EVER!!!!

Car on December 8, 2009 at 11:04 pm

i'm a big fan of finding peanut butter at the local farmer's market! no added sugar usually and it's absolutely delicious!

Jess on December 9, 2009 at 3:37 am

Jif Natural, Creamy. I have to look for Trader Joe's and try it.

Chad on December 9, 2009 at 2:24 pm

i think it's called mara eartha or something like that:S it tastes sooooo good and it has a silky smooth texture that is heavenly!

kaylee on December 9, 2009 at 3:10 pm

Jif – all the way!

Taster on December 9, 2009 at 4:29 pm

Actually, I prefer Smucker's Natural Peanut Butter. It's a mess to mix the oil when you first open it; but it's worth it for the taste! I'll take your advice and try the Trader Joe's next time because when it comes to peanut butter, only the best will do. It's a food group!!!

Stephen on December 9, 2009 at 4:32 pm

Cream-Nut by Coeze is the best peanut butter ever…it has won awards as simply the best…Zabar's, Fairway and many other places carry it and it is worth going out of your way for. My mother gave me a jar and nothing else will ever measure up although I still buy the Trader Joe's when I have to!

Polly on December 9, 2009 at 4:37 pm

I eat a lot of Peanut butter so the fat content is really important to me. Have you tested the reduced fat Jif???

PBlover on December 9, 2009 at 4:41 pm

Trader Joe’s is DEFINITELY my favorite!

Megan on December 9, 2009 at 12:41 pm

Naturally More Peanut Butter! The best but can be hard to find. We have it here in NC at Walmart. Natural ingredients, flax seeds, YUMMY!

Nikki on December 9, 2009 at 4:44 pm

Peanut Wonder makes a great low fat peanut butter if you are concerned about the fat content. 2 tbspns are 100 calories and 2 grams of fat. They also make a low sodium option. You have to keep it refrigerated, but it is a good alternative if you eat a lot of PB.

Rachel on December 9, 2009 at 4:46 pm

LETS HAVE SOME MOLASSES AND A LITTLE FULLY HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OILS TOSS IN SOME RAPESEED AND SOYBEAN AND A GOOD SHOT OF MONO-AND DIGYCERIDES, SALTS OUGH LETS DONT FORGET SOME PENUTS WITH OUT THE GOOD PEANUT OIL WE CAN BOTTLE THAT AND SELL IT EXTRA, AND WE CALL IT PEANUT BUTTER WOW WE WILL MAKE A MILLION MEAN WILE I THINK I'LL STICK TO FRESH GROUND PEANUTS I THINK THEY CALL THAT NATURAL PEANUT BUTTER YUM YUM I REALY DONT WANT MY KIDS GROWING FUNNY THINGS ON THER SKIN FROM CHEMICALS BUYER BEWARE

albertfrank on December 9, 2009 at 4:47 pm

I really like Better'n Peanut Butter.
Its 100cal for 2T and 85% less fat. Not as rich as regular peanut butter.
But a much better choice when you want to sit down with a jar of peanut butter and a spoon :)
This is their website, there are recipes there also.

Linda on December 9, 2009 at 4:52 pm

I absolutely love the peanut butter from Peanut Butter & Co in NY. Also, the Whole Foods brand Maranatha is great as well.

Jessica on December 9, 2009 at 4:54 pm

adams crunch is to die for!

vicki on December 9, 2009 at 4:55 pm

For commercial peanut butter, I prefer smuckers organic, it conyains roasted peanuts and salt. 210 calories. – only buy that wheb I am out of the organic I buy from the oklahoma food coop, made by a company In swothwst oklahoma named sniders.

martha holmes on December 9, 2009 at 1:00 pm

Adams, nothing but peanuts and salt. Amen for Adams! (But now I need to see if the Trader Joe’s version is just peanuts) Go Joe’s!

Kell on December 9, 2009 at 1:04 pm

So, can you get Trader Joe's at a regular supermarket or do you have to go to a Trader Joe's store?? We don't have one in Alabama, closest is Atlanta, that's why I thought I would ask.

Glenda on December 9, 2009 at 5:04 pm

I love Bell Plantation's powdered peanut butter. Just add water and voila! – fresh PB with just 50 cals. in 2Tbsp. serving. Shelf stable practically forever. Totally guilt free with plenty of protein. So far I have only been able to order it online because it is not in stores in my area.

The Real Sheila on December 9, 2009 at 5:06 pm

Peter Pan Honey Roasted Peanut Butter – I could'nt live without it

Jaclady on December 9, 2009 at 5:10 pm

I can live on Smucker's Natural Peanut Butter but I will try Trader Joe's.

Diane Flora on December 9, 2009 at 5:12 pm

I like Smucker's Natural! Just peanuts and salt.

Rachel on December 9, 2009 at 5:13 pm

Crazy Richards smooth or chunky. THE BEST! doesn't separate quickly when stored on the shelf.

Barry on December 9, 2009 at 5:15 pm

I like Kraft All-Natural. It has NOTHING added, just peanuts. It's smooth, with just a little bit of texture, tastes really yummy, and stays soft in the fridge.

Sarah on December 9, 2009 at 5:15 pm

I agree with Nikki, Naturally More is the best!!!

Dee Dee on December 9, 2009 at 5:18 pm

I absolutely love Skippy Reduced Fat Super Chunk Peant Butter … it's got great flavor and crunch. Definitely doesn't taste like a reduced fat product. It's great on celery or even right out of the jar!

NY2LA on December 9, 2009 at 5:22 pm

Natural JIF. Same taste, but it's healthy

Anneka on December 9, 2009 at 5:24 pm

I use Teddy’s peanut butter also and love it. I get the super chunky unsalted. I can’t stand peanut butter with salt.

Tiffany on December 9, 2009 at 1:25 pm

I've been a Trader Joe's peanut butter fan for years. I pour out 1/2 of the oil before stiorring and then putting in fridge — same taste, less oil. Their almond butter is great too!

Arlene on December 9, 2009 at 5:38 pm

Smucker's Natural Peanut Butter

Claude on December 9, 2009 at 5:39 pm

I read the list of ingredients which (w/ some) include flax seed. I had just ground some flax seed for inclusion in a bread recipe. I split for the kitchen, yanked out my jar of PB, tossed in a buch of ground flax seed and stirred energetically. And then tasted. Hey! The stuff is better w/ addition of the flax seed – it has more body, tastes better and is more chewy. Thanks for giving me the idea – this is something I will now do w/ all my PB.

teddybeau on December 9, 2009 at 5:44 pm

you can get freshly ground peanut butter at whole foods…the only ingredient is peanuts – nothing is added! I find the texture and peanut taste to be some of the best i've had – but if you prefer a really smooth consistency it might not be for you

pbjlover on December 9, 2009 at 5:45 pm

You have to try the Trader Joe's Creamy Unsalted Serv. Size 2 T^bsp per serving and 190 Cal. it is very good. However we like Almond butter (Cosco's Organic) a lot lee Sat. Fat and if one likes Almonds it is a great taste.

Irmgard on December 9, 2009 at 5:45 pm

Teddies is def. The BEST!!! All natural, Just Peanuts!!! Delicious!! I prefer the unsalted creamy. The superchunk is good too!!

Coleen Friend on December 9, 2009 at 5:47 pm

I am a total JIF lover and have peanut butter every single day. I have had all of these but Trader Joe's, which I will look for. In my opinion nothing comes close to JIF so far.

Eric on December 9, 2009 at 5:48 pm

We don't have a Trader Joe's around our area. I'd love to try it, maybe I can get it online. Does it have to be refrigerated all the time. I love PB, eat it everyday, but I prefer it at room temp.

ckieferb on December 9, 2009 at 5:56 pm

I love Naturally More – http://www.naturallymore.com/ – it's got more fiber, more protein, and less fat than other brands. No trans fats!

Glenda on December 9, 2009 at 6:00 pm

Hi there, Since we have to use ‘no’ or ‘low’ salt products. Trader Joe’s was the only place we found peanut butter without salt. We also pour a ‘little’ bit of the oil off (but not necessary, preference only) before we mix it up. We eat it so quickly, we don’t refrigerate it. They also have ’salt free’ tortilla chips. Great products at Trader Joe’s! Try it you will like it :-)

L. Sylvia on December 9, 2009 at 2:00 pm

What about the new Peter Pan Whipped .. by the spoonful (my fave way to eat it) its a lil different in a weird way, but added with anything else, its just regular good ole PB.

Crystil on December 9, 2009 at 6:04 pm

I prefer Smuckers Natural, either creamy or chunky. No Trader Joes or Teddies available in my area. Finally found the Smart Balance brand and thought it was awful. Gave it to my vet who loves it.

cakeshop on December 9, 2009 at 6:04 pm

All of the nutrition facts on each PB is almost identical. What difference does it make at that point? Just go with whichever one tastes the best to you! I love Jif Creamy. It's nutrition facts are the same as the "healthy" kinds.

Tami on December 9, 2009 at 6:04 pm

Teddie is incredible!! However, it is hard to find outside of New England, isn't it??

julia on December 9, 2009 at 6:07 pm

I agree. The only one I will buy. Never seen Trader Joe"s in my markets.

Geri on December 9, 2009 at 6:08 pm

Hell's Kitchen Homemade Peanut Butter. Seriously, folks…insane. I dunno what the spice combo but it complements the sweetness and smokiness of the ground-up roasted peanut bits perfectly. Swirled in peanut oil too I think.

http://www.hellskitcheninc.com/vmchk/Food/Peanut-...

Trina Enriquez on December 9, 2009 at 6:13 pm

I love Trader Joe's too and Adams as well. For less fat, I just pour the oil off the top before I use it!

Kristine on December 9, 2009 at 6:14 pm

Has anyone out there heard of Kraft Peanut Butter, no one has mentioned it or rated it, they have all types, with peanuts, without peanuts, all natural, original from 100 years ago, etc. it's by far the best peanut butter out there.

Aimee on December 9, 2009 at 6:29 pm

adams no-stir super chunky is the best ever

jane on December 9, 2009 at 6:30 pm

Maranatha! That is the best stuff. Indescribably delicious. Look for it in the natural foods section!

Brooke on December 9, 2009 at 6:31 pm

Hi ckieferb
You don't have to refrigerate Trader Joe's peanut butter (or any natural pb for that matter) but it will be more runny at room temperature. Thanks for your comment.

danawhite on December 9, 2009 at 6:39 pm

My Favorite is Skippy Natural It is true to the taste not fatty tasting, is all natural, has no trans fat per serving

Nancy on December 9, 2009 at 6:41 pm

We like Adams because it's just peanuts and salt. Adams is owned by the JM Smucker Company so does anyone know if Smuckers and Adams are the same? We have no Trader Joe's in Boise but wish they would open one here.

PeteC on December 9, 2009 at 6:44 pm

The reduced fat Jif is a favorite of a friend of mine, but it is MUCH sweeter than I'd expect from peanut butter – so much so that pb&j can get really sweet with most jellies. Be sure to check out the label and see what you think.

Katie on December 9, 2009 at 6:44 pm

I love Kirkland Organic Peanut Butter from Costco! I can't check right now, but I believe the ingredients are organic peanuts and salt. I'm not a big fan of all natural peanut butter, but want to be healthier so I made the switch…and then found this peanut butter! I LOVE it!
I recently tried the Smart Balance peanut butter too, and thought it tasted funny…I was wondering if I bought a bad jar, but after reading this, it must just be the brand.

Kasio on December 9, 2009 at 6:47 pm

Oooh! I loved the Smart Balance sweetened with Agave. It was a nice treat as I usually go with all natural almond butter.

Ryane on December 9, 2009 at 6:50 pm

I LIKE ALL-NATL PEANUT BUTTER, SMUCKERS, X-TRA CRUNCHY, ONE HAS TO MIX IT ONE-SELF, BUT IT IS ALL NATURAL, SO BETTER FOR U.

ALLIE on December 9, 2009 at 2:52 pm

Could you please tell my wife and I where can we buy the Trader Joe's peanut butter brand here in Miami? Thank you.

Mauricio Bohmer on December 9, 2009 at 7:00 pm

I have found that shaking the jar prior to opening makes mixing the pb so quick and easy.

Diane on December 9, 2009 at 7:02 pm

what is wrong with Peter Pan. I have ate it for years. Sure you can't beat frest grounded without all those bad things put into it that is in no way good for us.

joyce on December 9, 2009 at 7:19 pm

Adams Crunchy PB all the way!!

joanna on December 9, 2009 at 7:19 pm

I'm with you. I have tried them all and I think it is the best of the boughten

joyce on December 9, 2009 at 7:21 pm

My favorite is the PB I freshly grind at my local natural food store. I pick the nuts, I place them in the grinder and wait a few moments, you can't beat the taste of freashly ground nut butters (I also do cashew butter, almond butter, walnut butter), just wish I had a nut grinder at home so I could do individual grinds for my needs at the time.

John on December 9, 2009 at 7:22 pm

My favorite is the kind I grind at the local whole foods coop. Nothing in it buy organic peanuts. Wonderful stuff.

coraljean on December 9, 2009 at 7:47 pm

Laura Scudder's was my fav until discovering Trader Joe's, once they opened a store near us. Now ONLY TJ, chunky.

bc-CA central coast on December 9, 2009 at 7:53 pm

Skippy honey roasted is the bomb..with sliced bananas, or marshmello creme.(not very often ,too much sugar)

Fiddlesticks on December 9, 2009 at 8:08 pm

You missed on of the most important issues in rating your peanut butters for us peanut butter lovers. What about the saturated fat content.

Don on December 9, 2009 at 8:24 pm

I agree with you on the Smuckers, esp. about the mixing part

Randy on December 9, 2009 at 8:41 pm

We don't have Trader Joes or Teddy here, and I absolutely hate Jif and Skippy. I like Peter Pan – but it wasn't even in your test!

We have to vote for JIF it is always on our shelves and we dare not run out. I haven't had tradder Joe's because it is a long way to a trader Joe's. When I go to my son's in Richmond I will get some and try it

annetta on December 9, 2009 at 9:16 pm

Hi Stephen, I agree Smucker's Natural is the best!!!!

Patty on December 9, 2009 at 9:21 pm

Smuckers makes Natural Peanut Butter, amazing taste and the only ingredients are peanuts and salt. Also with honey added and even a no-salt-added flavor as well, never tried it though.

ilovefood0331 on December 9, 2009 at 9:33 pm

Big fan of the Smuckers Naturals!! Mmm mmmm!!

ilovefood0331 on December 9, 2009 at 9:33 pm

BETTER N' PEANUT BUTTER is the most amazing thing ever! It has only 100 calories and 2 grams of fat for 2 tablespoons. The peanut taste is so amazing, you would never know it's good for you. And yes, it IS made of peanuts! =]

Kassie Coulson on December 9, 2009 at 9:33 pm

I agree Stephen. Since the nearest Trader Joe's is more than 5 hours away from where I live, I can't try that one, but the ones that I see avalable in my super market are very pedestrian.

Barbara Ames on December 9, 2009 at 9:34 pm

its only like 2 grams less in fat

Kassie Coulson on December 9, 2009 at 9:35 pm

It is not fair to have tested the Teddy peanut butter with the added flax seed, as that is not their regular peanutbutter. I love Teddy creamy with salt (nothing else added) it is my favorite, and a great price too. I have not yet tried Trader Joes, so I may give them a try, although the nearest store is 20 miles away.

malch63 on December 9, 2009 at 9:50 pm

Seeing how trader joes is only in a few select cities, it does me no good to know that it is the highest rated. the nearest TJ is 85 miles away. How about rating products that all stores carry.

Melaniie on December 9, 2009 at 9:50 pm

HAS TO BE EXTRA CRUNCHY JIF

PETE on December 9, 2009 at 9:51 pm

Marantha is carried by other stores other than Whole foods.

Melanie on December 9, 2009 at 9:52 pm

I'm a "Jif" guy all the way. Three jars creamy in the pantry right now. I have never seen "Trader Joes" in any of the markets in our area, but I will try to find it and give it a whirl.

imanut on December 9, 2009 at 9:58 pm

Why didn't you rate Peter Pan??? my family won't eat it if it isn't Peter Pan. They look at people like they have two heads if they offer them a peanut butter sandwich made with aything else, then sweetly say, "I'm not That hungry. Thank You"

K.L.Rose on December 9, 2009 at 9:58 pm

Teddie's by far, and easy to get without flax seeds. I pay $2.50 per jar for mine at Market Basket stores. A bargain in price and taste, I don't mind stirring a bit, good cardio exercise. Have you tried peanut butter grilled same as a grilled cheese. Delicious, and you can add other things of your liking, try
a thin layer of honey..Use your imagination..

jessica on December 9, 2009 at 6:40 pm

I have enjoyed Laura Scudder's smooth pb for years; just peanuts and salt, but wish they would leave out the salt. It is the best! I tried Trader Joe's when it first came out and it had a weird taste, maybe I will try it again.

Ruth Case on December 9, 2009 at 10:41 pm

SMUCKERS'S NATURAL PEANUT BUTTER, MY FAVORITE. HAVE NOT COME ACROSS TRADER JOE'S IN THE DEEP SOUTH OF ALABAMA.

JOAN on December 9, 2009 at 10:47 pm

The very best peanut butter I have eaten is from Arrowhead Mills. Peanut butter made from organic Valencia peanuts, no added sugar, no added anything and absolutely delicious, the real taste of peanuts. And it comes in chunky, my favorite, and creamy.

alert59 on December 9, 2009 at 11:01 pm

Wondering why you didn't taste test the Skippy Natural, or the Jif Natural? Weird…but the Skippy Natural is great.

EBrad on December 9, 2009 at 11:16 pm

I believe you're talking about Maranatha. And it is great. Nothing but organic dry-roasted peanuts and sea salt. I'm not addicted to Jif anymore!

MarkOne on December 9, 2009 at 11:46 pm

i actually prefer the Teddie. i get the unsalted, chunky one-i prefer the texture of the nuts in there!

Aya on December 9, 2009 at 11:48 pm

I Am a vegaterian, and my main source of protein is peanut butter. I used Skippy's natural peanut everyday. I used just about with every fruit and veggie that I eat.

Mona on December 10, 2009 at 12:07 am

Try Smuckers -just peanuts and salt, and you can get it anywhere, not just Trader Joe's.

Kay on December 10, 2009 at 1:33 am

Adams Peantu butter is my favorite, I prefer chunky but both are great. You do have to mix the oil in but I think this is the closest I can get without goint to the health food store where they grind it fresh for me as I wait,

Sharon on December 10, 2009 at 1:35 am

Best Peanut BUtter is def. NATURALLY MORE.

Mary on December 10, 2009 at 1:37 am

I LOVE this peanut butter- I pick it up at the health food store…I will try the website, thanks Linda!

Fran on December 10, 2009 at 1:54 am

I add a half cup of Splenda to Smucker's all Natural and for some reason the Splenda acts like a binder to keep it from separating. I've tried others and made my own but always go back to the Smucker's

Mark on December 10, 2009 at 1:54 am

okay- here is my supreme weakness, Peter Pan Honey Roasted. I turned my whole family onto it and when it goes on sale- STOCK UP like crazy. Keep one at work, one in my main vehicle(never know) and of course home!

fran on December 10, 2009 at 1:58 am

Haven't tied this….is it better or the same as regular PP PB?

Fran on December 10, 2009 at 2:00 am

I like grinding my own at Fred Meyers or Winco. Yums!

Susan on December 10, 2009 at 2:41 am

Whole Foods 365 brand.. there are a few different varieties, i've liked them all, but i usually go for the unsweetened organic

Control on December 10, 2009 at 2:58 am

Jif has corn syrup. Don't touch it!

Debbie on December 10, 2009 at 3:03 am

YES! Maranatha is my brand of choise. Yum, yum.

Sarah on December 10, 2009 at 4:01 am

I love Skippy Natural its creamy with no need to stir. The ingredients: roasted peanuts, sugar, palm oil and salt. It has 190 cal. 16 grams of fat and 3 grams of sugar. The only problem is finding it. The major super markets don't carry it and I have ask the store managers if they can stock a few, they do but once they are gone they don't re-stock until asked. But target carries Skippy Natural and they stock the the bigger 26.5 oz jar….love it and at a reasonable price!

Skippy Natural fan on December 10, 2009 at 4:33 am

Nope, you have to trek to Trader Joe's. It'll be worth it, though – they have all kinds of cool and different things! And, if you like wine, they have very good, inexpensive ones.

Maggie on December 10, 2009 at 4:36 am

I like Simply Jif, myself…was also a huge fan of the reduced sugar Peter Pan, but I can't seem to find that anymore. I will give Trader Joe's a try, though!

Maggie on December 10, 2009 at 4:37 am

I love Peter Pan and Peanut Butter & Co. brands. Awsome

Victoria on December 10, 2009 at 5:06 am

I have eaten Laura Scudders all my life. Smuckers has bought Laura Scudders but has kept the same recipe. It is Peanuts and salt and that's it. You'll need to stir it when you open it but if you go to Smuckers web site they sell a lid that has a crank type stir blades. Woth the $6 if you eat peanut butter like I do. Everything is better with PB!! So I guess my Grandpa knew what he was eating was also good for him and his grandkids. I have now been eating Laura Scudders (but Smuckers is almost as good) for 55 years.

George Perrone on December 10, 2009 at 5:45 am

Oh, no, no, no! Western Family Peanut Butter is THE BEST!

troutgal on December 10, 2009 at 6:50 am

Oh, no, no, no…Western Family is THE BES!!!!!

troutgal on December 10, 2009 at 6:53 am

That's my favorite too! It's awesome! :)

Moore on December 10, 2009 at 1:17 pm

I like Skippy

Frances on December 10, 2009 at 1:32 pm

Myfavorite PB is Publix Natural Chunky and Smooth. No sugar or added oils – just peanuts and salt.

titansfan01 on December 10, 2009 at 4:51 pm

I'm a 20 year-old pseudo-health nut,

My parents grew up overseas, so–while they like peanut butter–it's not a regular part of their diet. My siblings and I, however–growing up in the USA–were raised on JIF. I'm the last kid in the house and do most of the cooking. Now I alternate between Better n' Peanut Butter and Smucker's All-Natural, Reduced-Fat Creamy Peanut Butter (too bad none of my stores carry Reduced-Fat Chunky. Mmm…) They're both a little more expensive than your standard mass-produced nut butters (+/- $5 a jar depending on the store).
I'd like to see how you compare those two to the others you have tested. I'll try Trader Joe's once I find it.

MyMomCallsMePeanut on December 10, 2009 at 5:49 pm

My parents gave me a food processor for Christmas last year and (whenever we buy the big can of Planter's Roasted & Salted XL Whole & Half VA Peanuts from Sam's Club) I've taken to making my own peanut butter:
Get an old, clean peanut butter jar (preferably glass). In to the FP, drop 1 Cup of Peanuts, a dash of Kosher Salt (to start), and pulse a few times, then process until smooth and creamy (or your desired consistency), for a few minutes. If you like it saltier, sprinkle in a little more (keep in mind they've already been salted during commercial roasting). If you like it sweeter and/or smoother, drizzle in your favorite honey, tasting as you go–watch your consistency!

MyMomCallsMePeanut on December 10, 2009 at 5:50 pm

If you measure as you go, it's easy to keep track of the caloric content. Usually, when it comes to peanut butter, I'm not concerned with calories. But when I am, I just stick to the Better n' Peanut Butter. I agree with Linda above–it's a life-saver with a spoon. :-)
Refridgerate to avoid separation (but it keeps homogenous/mixed @ room temp pretty well), toast your bread to make it easier to spread when making sandwiches. If you're going to use a lot at once, microwave the jar for 10 seconds (treat it delicately, like ice cream, but don't 'soften' it so much that you internally cook the plant fats).

MyMomCallsMePeanut on December 10, 2009 at 5:51 pm

ANECDOTE: My dad is a very picky, timid eater (especially now that he's getting older and worrying about his health and weight). Since I've started cooking, he's willing to try new things. While I was making the above Pbutter, He peeked over my shoulder "Whatcha makin'?" "Peanut Butter." "Peanut Butter?! Yeesh!" "Yeah. What? Do you have something against the PB?" "Huh? Well, no, but it's… Hey, that smells good." He proceeded to swipe a fingerfull of the salty spread straight from the jar in my hand. "Mmm! That IS good!" It was gone within the week.

Long Live PB!

MyMomCallsMePeanut on December 10, 2009 at 5:51 pm

I am a big TJ's peanut butter fan. I prefer it to the freshly ground pb from Whole Foods or Andronicos. Then I tried the Kirkland brand organic peanut butter two pack from Costco. it is our favorite.

jane on December 10, 2009 at 6:13 pm

I will admit that Smart Balance peanut butter is an acquired taste – and now that I've acquired the taste for other brands, like Skippy and Jif, taste funny to me.

Akire on December 10, 2009 at 8:29 pm

Whole Foods Crunchy Peanut Butter – only ingredients are Peanuts and Salt. So yummy, and probably very similar to Trader Joe's. I also like to grind my own in the machines they have, usually near the bulk section. It's a fresh as it gets.

Carrie on December 10, 2009 at 10:41 pm

I personally like Kroger Peanut Butter, the contents are Peanuts & Salt only. To me this is healthy. I buy the Crunchy kind!

Rosalie on December 10, 2009 at 11:01 pm

Kroger Brand Creamy is wonderful. I use it for everything between P B & J's to my famous Peanut Butter Pie.

Kevin on December 10, 2009 at 11:47 pm

Simply JIF is really good. I will have to try Trader Joe's.

Nancy on December 11, 2009 at 2:18 am

Skippy – same since I was a kid and I still think it is the best. Trader Joe's the last time I had it did separate and since I believe that refrigerating peanut butter is akin to freezing wine (flavor wise) I have not purchased any lately. When all the jars say no refrigeration necessary why would one take something that is smooth and creamy and keep it in the refrigerator? I just asking?

Richard on December 11, 2009 at 6:01 am

Whole Foods Market freshly ground honey peanut butter. It's fantastic!!

miry on December 11, 2009 at 6:46 am

My boyfriend uses a soy based variety of 'peanut butter' called I.M. Healthy soynut butter. I prefer almond butter. The soy nut butter is about $5.00 and the almond butter is around $8-$10.

Kari on December 11, 2009 at 7:31 am

If I buy a national brand it is Smucker's Natural, but I am a purist and like my peanut butter made from peanuts. Peanuts have enough natual oil that there is no need to add any. Heinen's grocery stores make there own that is just peanuts. I'm sure if you don't have a Heinen's or a Whole Foods you can easily find a made in store brand that is just peanuts. You don't have to want for peanut flavor when that is all there is.

Julie on December 11, 2009 at 3:55 pm

why not GRIND your own!

Diana on December 11, 2009 at 7:26 pm

I agree, Naturally More is the best-lower in fat & carbs and higher in fiber & protein. Price is good also. I get it @ Wal Mart in SC.

CHRISTIAN on December 12, 2009 at 3:58 am

I LOVE Smuckers Natural Peanut Butter, especially the crunchy. It is wonderful on a banana, because the sweetness of the banana isn't overpowered by the sweetness in the peanut butter. I too will try Trader Joe's.

Joy Zamierowski on December 12, 2009 at 1:40 pm

I absolutely LOVE Peter Pan Whipped peanut butter, and when I can't find it I like the original creamy Peter Pan, but I don't know how they would rank. The last time I compared labels I think they looked better to me than Jif, but its been a while.

Aimee on December 13, 2009 at 2:58 am

Has anyone tried Better'n Peanut Butter? http://creativedelites.com/2009/10/14/new-foods-s...

elyse on December 13, 2009 at 11:56 pm

Jif is the best. Why look elsewhere? If we don't want add ins, why not just eat the peanuts or grind them up ourselves?

Joand. on December 14, 2009 at 3:20 am

I love Skippy extra crunchy but eat the smooth sometimes too! Will look for Trader Joes to try but we don't have a Trader Joes store around here….

Robin on December 14, 2009 at 12:57 pm

I prefer Skippy Natural. It's nothing but peanuts, sugar, palm oil and salt. It tastes a lot better than regular Skippy too, in my opinion.

Jenn on December 14, 2009 at 9:50 pm

I am with you 100% Coeze's is the best there is – expensive and worth it. Nothing compares.

stacey on December 16, 2009 at 7:20 pm

I think you have to be careful about that. As I understand it, there is a mold that can grow on peanuts. When you get peanut butter from a Farmers Market or any other place where it is not a regular food processing company, you don't know whether or not moldy peanuts have been used. Anyone have more information on this?

Evelyn on December 16, 2009 at 8:20 pm

We are peanut Butter lovers have you tried "Krema". It is wonderfull!!

Jerrie Pendergraft on December 17, 2009 at 5:32 pm

I live in canada, & at the Real Canadian superstore, they have brand called "Just Nuts", it is just peanuts, & some salt. I have tried most of the peanut butters up here, they all have sugar, ugh, I don;t like eating sweet peanut butter.

Lorelei on December 19, 2009 at 3:58 pm

I love love love Naturally More Peanut Butter. It contains flaxseeds, but it tastes so good. Also, it is only about 168 cal. per 2T. Its great!!!

Oh, and PB&Co peanut butters ROCK.

Meag on December 19, 2009 at 7:09 pm

that's my favorite!! i love the honey taste!

alicia on December 20, 2009 at 3:55 pm

I like the Peter Pan with Honey, it's really good/

Jim on December 25, 2009 at 10:23 pm

I like Crazy Richards as well. I only buy Peanut butter made from from peanuts (and perhaps a pinch of salt).

Craig on December 25, 2009 at 10:33 pm

Sheila,

Please send me the website where this can be bought. harts4man@gmail.com

david on December 25, 2009 at 10:36 pm

what about cashew butter it's not p nut butter but it sure is good!!!!

hwtmore on December 25, 2009 at 10:59 pm

Jif it's the best their is!

albert on December 25, 2009 at 11:01 pm

I have lllllloved peanut butter from the time I was a small child. In fact, I learned from a dog how to eat peanut butter on toast or a cracker by tipping it upside down in order not to get peanut butter on the roof of my mouth. I don't need sugar or salt. I don't want to put sugar and salt on my sandwich. I want peanut butter. So I eat Laura Scudder's Peanut Butter-Unsalted.

davidio37 on December 26, 2009 at 3:56 am

I’ve tried most of them; Teddie is deffinitly my choice. By the way, tell your copy writer to look up the difference between effect and affect.

David H. Partington, Ph.D. on December 26, 2009 at 2:36 am

There is no comparison whatsoever. The best peanut butter by far is JIF! Does anyone remember back in the 70's the Peanut Butter called Koo Koo?

Sammie Houston on December 26, 2009 at 3:50 pm

Yes…the best!

Janet on December 26, 2009 at 7:22 pm

Extra crunchy Jiff rocks my world

Lee Anne on December 30, 2009 at 5:53 pm

It is so tasty though

Lee Anne on December 30, 2009 at 5:54 pm

I completely agree why would you try the flaxseed one?

Holly on January 1, 2010 at 2:10 am

I wish I could find this in the NE… everyone raves about this. Right now Teddie Bear Super Crunchy will have to do! :)

Holly on January 1, 2010 at 2:15 am

I buy my favorite peanut butter at Publix Supermarket, they ground theirs from fresh roasted peanuts, with nothing added to it, it is great & always taste very fresh because it is always fresh.
Give it a try, no sugar added or preservatives, just ground fresh roasted peanuts, I like to dip sliced
apples, & pretzels in it, so good.

Sandy on January 1, 2010 at 6:45 am

Creamy Jif is the best tasting peanut butter ever!!! I use only Jif when making PBJ's and for my Christmas buckeyes (cookies.) The flavor/taste of peanuty Jif can't be beat, and Sam's sells it very reasonably in a 2 pack!

Darlene on January 2, 2010 at 4:39 am

Adams is the best to me-crunchy -never any additives and its been around forever.

katie in Reno on January 2, 2010 at 8:46 pm

are u trying to get your kids healthier without them knowing? either Jif or Skippy Natural. Both will trick ANY picky eater, just like it does me – every day. Turns out my store brand’s natural organic tastes the same as both of them, with no separation. (Meijer, if you’re in MI). yum

Jen on January 2, 2010 at 10:14 pm

PEANUTS & LOCAL HONEY IN FOOD PROCESSOR!!! Ya can't beat it!!

acachey on January 4, 2010 at 11:47 pm

Disappointed in Smart Balance creamy with flaxseed oil – upset my stomach. I pitched it.
Ann

Ann Fox on January 11, 2010 at 3:06 am

I choose Trader Joe's of course!

Gezonde Voeding on January 12, 2010 at 5:57 am

Laura Scudder's Crunchy, it's the best. Peanuty. Natural. You have to stir it the first time, then keep in refrigerator.

Jeanne on January 14, 2010 at 4:58 am

i like jiff chunky

verna on January 19, 2010 at 2:01 am

Any Jif peanut butter is my favorite !!

Kelly on January 20, 2010 at 8:25 pm

i love Crazy Richards Chunky but my 9 year old is loyal to the dreaded Skippy Creamy. I'm ready to try Trader Joe's though – love the store, and several very positive comments have sold me.

Charlotte on January 21, 2010 at 5:53 pm

Whole Foods carries a brand called 365 that is just peanuts and salt and not too much salt. It's pretty good and reasonably priced.

Patty on January 22, 2010 at 4:38 pm

The one I grind on the spot at Whole Foods is my very favorite; organic, fresh and nothing added. Best ever!

Miry on January 30, 2010 at 4:50 am

Definitely the best tasting. So its not natural……what IS these days! Sometimes I can't stop spooning this stuff! Watch out though, it will put weight on you quick! I think I'll go grab me a spoonful now.

Kevin McPeanut on February 7, 2010 at 10:50 pm

Kroger brand reduced fat PB is creamy but slightly sticky as all PB was before adding all the emulsifiers.
I like it as well as any PB I have ever tasted.
I live in the Knoxville, TN area.
